what is scalp psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious disease caused when cells mature so rapidly that dead skin does not have time to shed, causing raised patches of dead skin to form. It is characterized by silver/white scabs covering red patches or lesions.

However, psoriasis is much less common than dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis and is caused by something different. Scalp psoriasis is caused by a rare genetic condition that effects the body’s immune system. Only 3% of the population develop the disease (though scientists believe 10% inherit genes with the predisposition).

If you think you have psoriasis - cases can range from mild (covering less than 5% of the body) to severe (covering more than 30% of the body) and that 50% of psoriasis cases are located on the scalp.

If you think you are suffering from psoriasis you should consult your doctor. A proper diagnosis and treatment plan is essential. Typically, doctors will recommend starting with topical treatments that include salicylic acid and/or coal tar (both active ingredients found in Denorex products). For best results, discuss with your doctor the use of our Denorex products.

what is dry, itchy scalp

Many people suffer from dry, itchy scalp. The dryness could be a result of dandruff or it could be the cause. Either way, it’s a frustrating yet common symptom of an underlying problem.

In a healthy scalp, skin cells create an overlapping wall that allows in hydration and locks in moisture. When you suffer from dry scalp your skin’s defensive barrier becomes irritated and damaged and can no longer retain the moisture it needs.

A weakened barrier allows hydration to escape and can result in a feeling of tightness, itching and irritation and that pesky symptom; a flaky scalp.

how to prevent dry, itchy scalp

There are some simple habits for keeping a healthy and hydrated scalp; like a balanced diet (with plenty of Zinc, B-vitamins and Omega3 Fatty Acids) and drinking plenty of water. Also, pay attention to your surroundings. If it is particularly cold your skin might be dehydrated due to dry heating in your home and/or work place. Using humidifiers can help with your dry, itchy scalp.

what is sensitive scalp

If you have a tendency towards sensitive skin it could easily be transferred to your scalp. A sensitive scalp shows signs of redness, itching, dryness and flakes more easily than less sensitive skin.

how to prevent sensitive scalp

There are some simple habits for helping your sensitive scalp like avoid showering with hot water; the milder the temperature the better for your skin and being gentle when you lather your shampoo into your hair. A vigorous scrubbing might feel good temporarily on itchy skin, but it is causing more harm than good.
