USING ACTIVE
INGREDIENTS TO
TREAT DANDRUFF

ZINC PYRITHIONE
Zinc Pyrithione is an antifungal that targets dead skin cells. Of all the active ingredients, it is the gentlest and can be used daily to keep mild dandruff under control. Product with Zinc Pyrithione like Zincon can also be used on alternating days to supplement other active ingredients. It is an effective, common, over-the-counter solution for mild dandruff.

SALICYLIC ACID
Salicylic Acid’s main function is to loosen scales and remove scalp build up. Salicylic Acid helps to control scalp build up from dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis. It helps relieve scalp irritation and itching. Products with Salicylic Acid like Denorex Extra Strength Shampoo should be used 2-3 times a week. Salicylic Acid is available in over-the-counter and prescription forms.

COAL TAR
Coal Tar is used to treat thick, heavy build up that is a result of severe Seborrheic Dermatitis and Psoriasis. Coal Tar works by slowing the production of skin cells, reducing redness, inflammation, irritation and relieving painful itching. Denorex combines Coal Tar with Menthol to help calm and soothe serious scalp problems. Products with Coal Tar like Denorex Maximum Strength Shampoo should not be used more than 2-3 times a week. Coal Tar is available in over-the-counter and prescription forms.0>

KETOCONAZOLE
Ketoconazole is a strong active ingredient that treats yeast infections on the scalp. Products with Ketoconazole should be used sparingly. Consult a physician before using it. Once or twice a week for up to 8 weeks or as directed by a physician is usually recommended. Ketoconazole is available in both over-the-counter and prescription form.

SELENIUM SULFIDE
Selenium Sulfide combats Malassezia, a fungus, that results in dandruff. Some caution is advised when using Selenium Sulfide. It can slow cell turnover and discolor light-colored hair or chemically treated hair. Like the other active ingredients, it is available in prescription and over-the-counter strengths.
NATURAL + HOME REMEDIES
Many people would prefer to use natural or home remedies to help eliminate dandruff. Unfortunately, there is very little research on the effectiveness of natural remedies and not all natural remedies will work for everyone. If you have dandruff or a scalp condition, consider speaking with a physician before trying natural remedies.

ASPIRIN APPLE CIDER VINEGAR COCONUT OIL SUN EXPOSURE TEA TREE OIL
Aspirin is an over-the-counter pain reliever that can help to reduce dandruff. Aspirin contains Salicylic Acid, an active ingredient commonly used in dandruff shampoos like Denorex Extra Strength. Salicylic Acid helps to exfoliate excess dandruff flakes, prevents oil buildup and reduces inflammation on the scalp. To use Salicylic Acid on dandruff, try crushing two uncoated aspirin tablets into a fine powder. Add the powder to shampoo before washing your hair.
People have used apple cider vinegar to treat a variety of conditions like insulin sensitivity and weight loss. It is also used as a natural remedy for dandruff. It helps reduce dandruff by suppressing the growth of fungi on the scalp. The acidity of the vinegar also helps stimulate the exfoliation of dead skin cells and balances the pH of the skin, further reducing the growth of fungus and controlling dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis. To treat dandruff simply massage apple cider vinegar into your scalp. Leave it on for 10 – 15 minutes, then wash with a mild shampoo.
Coconut oil seems to be a natural remedy for everything, including dandruff. It can help improve hydration, reduce irritation and prevent fungal growth on the scalp. Coconut oil and its compounds have also been shown to have antimicrobial properties on the specific strain of fungus that causes dandruff. Try applying coconut oil directly to the scalp before washing it out or find a shampoo that contains coconut oil.
Exposure to sunlight is a natural remedy recommended for a variety of skin conditions. Spending a little time in the sun may also be helpful in treating dandruff. As most people know, however, too much exposure to ultraviolet rays can damage skin and lead to skin cancer. It only takes a few minutes for the sun to start damaging skin. As a dandruff treatment, time in the sun should be limited to 15 minutes or less. Extended exposure like sunbathing is not recommended. Be sure to protect the rest of your body with clothing and sunblock. A note of caution: Some anti-dandruff treatments with Coal Tar, like Denorex Maximum Strength Shampoo , can increase scalp sensitivity to UV light. If you're using an anti-dandruff treatment with Coal Tar, check with your physician before extended exposure to the sun or using tanning booths and sun lamps.
Tea tree oil is an essential oil that is used to treat lots of conditions from acne to dermatitis. It contains high concentrations of powerful antibacterial properties which help reduce dandruff by suppressing growth on the scalp. Tea tree oil has been shown to reduce the severity of symptoms like oiliness and itching. Applied directly to the scalp, tea tree oil can cause irritation in people with sensitive skin. To use tea tree oil, start by adding a few drops to your shampoo or diluting it with coconut oil before applying it.
